Macie Henjum (NCRC) Project!
First Chapter Friday is a classroom literacy activity designed to get students excited about reading.
What it is:
On Fridays, the teacher reads the first chapter of a high-interest book aloud to the class. I choose different topics and genres, hopefully to spark interest in all my students at some point.
Why it’s done:
The goal is to hook students into new books and spark curiosity. By hearing just the beginning, students get invested in the characters and storyline without having the whole book given away.
Benefits:
Builds excitement around reading
Exposes students to different genres and authors
Strengthens listening comprehension
Encourages independent reading (students often want to check the book out afterward!)
Helps struggling readers access grade-level texts through read-aloud
It’s essentially a fun, low-pressure way to promote a love of reading and introduce great books.
